Mother Nature must surely love Kentucky basketmakers. She furnishes them with the best of materials
right at their back door. During this class participants will
get a rare chance to work with two of the best of these materials -
honeysuckle and hickory bark. Under the guidance of Janet
Northern, students will weave a lovely egg basket from honeysuckle
runners and strips of hickory bark. Because of the nature of the
materials, each basket will be unique, a distinct work of its
creator.
For this class all materials
have been prepared for the students, but during the class Janet will
discuss how both the plant materials are harvested and prepared. The finished baskets
will measure approximately 8" x 8" x 8".

Janet Northern, or "Charlie" as
most of her friends know her, has been making baskets for more
than ten years and is primarily self-taught. To create her
baskets, she utilizes the wood and natural vines that she
finds and gathers in the region surrounding her Rockcastle
County farm near the Daniel Boone National forest. The Eastern
Kentucky woodlands give Janet inspiration as well as material
from which to work.
Janet Northern is a juried member of the
Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen. She regularly
demonstrates at Berea Tourism and the Kentucky Artisan Center
in Berea.
