"Show of Hands"

In 2003, the Berea Arts Council organized the Show of Hands, an unprecedented exhibit of twelve 6-foot tall hand sculptures.  Local businesses, non-profits, and groups of individuals coalesced to provide financial support for twelve artists to decorate these hands, each cast in fiberglass based on a common sculpture commissioned from an Eastern Kentucky University sculptor. City government of Berea took responsibility for placing the hands on concrete pedestals and securing them throughout the community. The project was an amazing success in galvanizing public interest and support for the arts and provided a spectacular context for the arrival of the Artisan Center in the community. The hands remain the most vibrant manifestation of public art in the town. City government will maintain them indefinitely, and they may be viewed in various public locations as you drive through Berea.
