The Flying Quilt Project - 2007

The Arts Council's 2003 Show of Hands public art project had the Berea community talking. Local residents and tourists alike are still enjoying those hands four years later! The 2007 community art project, Flying Quilts, created yet another public visual feast.  BAC’s goals for Flying Quilts were to encourage in our citizens an understanding and enjoyment of public art by bringing them into the experience as artists, and to foster a sense of community between participating citizens groups and the “Folk Arts and Craft Capital of Kentucky.”

Imagine a host of quilt inspired flags, beautifully painted by community groups, school groups, businesses and individuals flying above Chestnut Street. Thanks to funding from The Kentucky Arts Council, and local doctors, Brenda Huser-Taylor, DC and Mary Oldfield, DMD, that's exactly what has happen. Every year beginning in July of 2007 our flags will fly above the streets during Berea’s Quilt Extravaganza.

Images from the creation of these quilt flags are available by clicking here.  A list of sponsors and artists is available here.  The completed quilt flags were on display at ArtSpace from June 29 through July 9, 2007 before being hung above the streets of Berea.
